Gregory Hines
Biography
Gregory Hines, who died in 2003, was a New York City-born tap dancer, choreographer, singer, and actor. He grew up in Harlem, began tap at age two, and performed with his brother Maurice as the Hines Kids and later the Hines Brothers, studying under Henry LeTang. He first appeared on Broadway in The Girl in Pink Tights (1954). He earned Tony nominations for Eubie!, Comin' Uptown, and Sophisticated Ladies, then won a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for Jelly's Last Jam. His first film role came in Mel Brooks's History of the World: Part I (1981), and he went on to appear in Wolfen (1981), The Cotton Club (1984), White Nights (1985), Running Scared (1986), and Tap (1989). He starred in the sitcom The Gregory Hines Show and had a recurring role as Ben Doucette on Will & Grace. He voiced Big Bill on Little Bill, winning a Daytime Emmy Award in 2003.
