Plot summary
In 1983, Nick Styles is a rookie Los Angeles police officer and a law student. He meets Alice, and he drifts away from his childhood friend Odessa, who now deals drugs in South Central. On patrol with his partner Larry Doyle at a carnival, Nick faces hit man Earl Talbot Blake, who has taken a hostage after killing several dealers. Nick strips off his uniform and equipment, uses a gun concealed in his athletic supporter, and shoots Blake in the knee. An amateur videographer films the standoff, and the footage makes Nick a hero; he and Doyle are promoted. Eight years later, Nick is an assistant district attorney, married to Alice, with two daughters. Blake, in prison, allies with the Aryan Brotherhood and plots revenge against the man who put him there.

- Ricochet's script began as a Dirty Harry film by Fred Dekker, but Clint Eastwood rejected it as too grim; once Joel Silver took it over, Dekker met with Kurt Russell about starring and planned to direct himself, though he never reached production.
- Test-screening reactions led to heavy cuts of the film's violence; director Russell Mulcahy said one deleted scene showed Blake making Styles vomit from abuse and then cleaning him up with a sponge, explaining the vomit later seen on Styles.
- Ice-T's title song "Ricochet" was originally meant for his album Home Invasion but was pulled after earlier controversy over his lyrics, then resurfaced as a bonus disc with Home Invasion once he had left Warner Bros. for Priority Records.
