Plot summary
One night in the town where he lives, Caleb Colton meets a drifter named Mae, who asks for a ride. Just before sunrise she bites his neck and runs off, and when daylight reaches him his flesh smokes and burns. Mae comes back with a band of vampires who travel in an RV, and they carry him away. Severen wants him killed, but Mae says she has turned him already. Their leader, Jesse Hooker, lets Caleb stay a week to learn to hunt and win the group's trust. Caleb will not kill for blood, so Mae kills in his place and has him drink from her wrist. Caleb's sister Sarah and his father Loy Colton are searching for him.

- Bigelow has attributed the film's lack of box-office success to The Lost Boys, released two months earlier on a comparatively wider 1,542 screens, calling it "a vampire movie made by Warner Bros. that had a tremendous amount of muscle behind it" while her own film was "just this little whisper out there."
- Michael Biehn was offered the role of Jesse Hooker but rejected it because he found the script confusing, and Lance Henriksen took over the role instead.
- Kathryn Bigelow knew and later married director James Cameron, whose Aliens shares three cast members with Near Dark: Paxton, Goldstein and Henriksen. A cinema seen in the background early on has Aliens on its marquee, and Cameron himself plays the man who "flips off" Severen.
- In December 2008, Platinum Dunes producer Bradley Fuller said a planned remake had been put on hold because of similarities in conception with Twilight, which also contained a romance between human and vampire characters.
