John Amos
Biography
John Amos was an American actor who moved from professional football into television and film, and he became best known as James Evans Sr. on the CBS sitcom Good Times from 1974 to 1976. He first became known through a McDonald's commercial in 1971, and his first major television part was Gordy Howard on The Mary Tyler Moore Show, a weatherman he played from 1970 to 1973. Playing the adult Kunta Kinte in the 1977 miniseries Roots earned him an Emmy nomination. His film work included Disney's The World's Greatest Athlete (1973) and The Beastmaster (1982), and he played Captain Meissner in Lock Up (1989) and Major Grant in Die Hard 2 (1990), as well as appearing in Coming to America (1988) and its sequel Coming 2 America (2021). He wrote and performed the one-man play Halley's Comet, won three TV Land Awards, and in 2020 the New Jersey Hall of Fame inducted him.
