Plot summary
Mai Shiranui, an undercover CIA operative, goes with her boyfriend Iori Yagami to a Boston museum for the private unveiling of three relics. Rugal Bernstein storms the exhibit, seizes the relics and disappears through a dimensional portal, intending to awaken the mythical Orochi and its limitless power. The Kusanagi Sword he takes turns out to be a fake. A wounded Chizuru Kagura, who hosts the King of Fighters tournament, says the genuine blade belongs to Saisyu Kusanagi, held in a mental institution, where Mai meets his son Kyo. CIA agent Terry Bogard demands Rugal's whereabouts from Chizuru, and Rugal rewrites the tournament database so challengers worldwide are summoned.
