Plot summary
In the early 1990s, Dixie Leonard, long retired from the stage, is due at a televised Hollywood ceremony in her honor and Eddie Sparks's. When a young man from the show comes to collect her, she refuses to leave and tells him how she and Eddie met and what drove them apart; most of the story unfolds as her memory. That memory opens in World War II, when Dixie, a singer and dancer, is offered a place in Eddie's act for the troops abroad. The soldiers love her at once, and Eddie, whose jokes she has been topping, wants her off the bill. She dislikes him in return. Other entertainers and her joke-writing uncle Art press her to stay.
