Plot summary
Johnny Van Owen drifts from city to city with his crew, rapping and dancing at a nightclub. Passing through a small town, the group is stranded when Jazz's motorcycle breaks down, and it has to sit at a repair shop while they wait. Johnny spends the time getting to know Kathy Winslow, an honor student with a boyfriend named Nick, and he advises her to dump him. At a club Kathy frequents, Johnny and the crew take over the stage from the house band and play their own number, which humiliates Nick. Nick offers to take Kathy home, but she walks instead. Kathy's father, Gordon, does not trust Johnny and tells his daughter to keep her distance from strangers. She still goes riding with Johnny the next day, against her father's wishes.
