Plot summary
In London in 1610, Governor Ratcliffe tells King James that John Smith is a traitor, and Smith is presumed dead after soldiers come for him. Ratcliffe wants war with the Powhatan Nation and the gold he is sure it holds. Hoping to avoid that war, the King has the young diplomat John Rolfe fetch Chief Powhatan to England for talks. In Jamestown, Pocahontas mourns Smith and then agrees to go in her father's place, with her bodyguard Uttamatomakkin, known as Uti. Rolfe and Pocahontas clash at first. In England, the King will not meet her; on Ratcliffe's advice he invites her to a ball, promising to hold off the armada if she behaves in a civilized way. Rolfe and Mrs. Jenkins, his housemaid, prepare her for it.
