Plot summary
Beca Mitchell enrolls at Barden University because her father wants her to try college before she becomes a music producer. She makes song mash-ups and interns at the campus radio station, where she befriends Jesse Swanson. The Barden Bellas, the school's all-female a cappella group, are recruiting after a rough showing at the previous year's finals, and co-leaders Aubrey Posen and Chloe Beale bring in eight new singers, among them Beca and Fat Amy. Aubrey drills the group on the same medley, while Beca argues for bolder arrangements. The Bellas want another shot at the collegiate a cappella championship, where the all-male Treblemakers, the team Jesse has joined, are the rival group.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Adam DeVine was personally chosen for the role of Bumper by Elizabeth Banks and her husband Max Handelman, self-described "big Workaholics fans" who spotted him on that show during casting; he declined at first because he was not a singer, then surprised them with his vocal skills.
- The film is based on Mickey Rapkin's 2008 non-fiction book; the GQ senior editor spent a season covering competitive collegiate a cappella, following the Tufts University Beelzebubs, the inspiration for the Treblemakers, the University of Oregon Divisi, the loose inspiration for the Bellas, and the University of Virginia Hullabahoos, who have a cameo in the film.
- Kira Kazantsev won Miss America 2015 on September 14 after performing "Happy" with cup percussion, in a manner similar to Anna Kendrick's character in Pitch Perfect.
