Plot summary
Alex Fletcher was one half of the 1980s British pop duo PoP!, and he now plays those old songs at reunions and state fairs while his former partner, Colin Thompson, enjoys solo stardom. Cora Corman, a young singing sensation and a PoP! fan, asks Alex to write a duet titled "Way Back Into Love" within days, and his manager, Chris Riley, urges him to accept. Alex can compose music but has never written lyrics, and a session with a hired lyricist goes badly. Sophie Fisher, the woman hired to water his plants, hums words of her own that fit his tune, though she insists she is no lyricist. She gave up writing after a failed romance with Sloan Cates, an English professor whose best-selling novel used her as its model.

- Neither of the film's end-credits songs made the soundtrack album: Haley Bennett's “Invincible” and “Work to Do”, written by Adam Schlesinger, who wrote most of the songs for the film, and performed by the folk band America.
- Martin Fry of the pop band ABC served as Grant's vocal coach for the movie, and the film's album also reached number 93 on the Australian Albums Chart.
- The film opened on February 9, 2007 in the United Kingdom and Ireland and ranked number one at the box office, grossing 1.93 million pounds in its first weekend.
