Skylar Astin
Biography
Skylar Astin is an American actor and singer who started in theater, playing Georg in the original Broadway cast of Spring Awakening. Born in New York City and raised in New City, New York, he left New York University's Tisch School of the Arts when the show cast him. During that run he filmed Hamlet 2 (2008) as Rand Posin. He became known as Jesse Swanson in Pitch Perfect (2012), then returned for Pitch Perfect 2 (2015), and he also appeared in 21 & Over (2013) and Cavemen (2013). On television he played Max in Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist, Greg Serrano in the last season of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and Todd in So Help Me Todd from 2022 to 2024. He played Brody Moyer on the TBS sitcom Ground Floor, took the role of Mark Cohen in a Hollywood Bowl production of Rent, and appeared there in Into the Woods as the Baker.

Astin took a leave of absence from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University when he was cast in Spring Awakening.
About the name
At 15, Astin's agent told him to take his middle name, Astin, as his stage last name rather than his surname, so it would be less specific to one thing.
Big break
While playing Georg in Spring Awakening, Astin filmed the role of Rand Posin in Hamlet 2, and screenings at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival led to him signing with United Talent Agency.
Beyond film
Skylar Astin honored Dick Van Dyke by singing "Put On a Happy Face" on the CBS primetime special Dick Van Dyke: 98 Years of Magic, which aired December 21, 2023. The song came from the 1960 play Bye Bye Birdie.
