Keith Richards

Biography

Keith Richards is an English musician, singer, songwriter and record producer. He has been the guitarist for the Rolling Stones since the early 1960s and, with Mick Jagger, writes the band's songs, a partnership the article calls one of the most successful in history. Born in Dartford, Kent, he grew up there and was given his first guitar by his grandfather, a jazz bandleader. He left Sidcup Art College in 1962 to focus on music. His rhythm playing, use of open tunings, and the guitar interplay he called weaving shaped the group's sound. He sang lead on Happy and other songs, produced records under the Glimmer Twins name, and formed his own band, the X-Pensive Winos. He appeared as Captain Teague in the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, On Stranger Tides (2011). The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him in 1989, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1993.

About the name
In 1963, Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham advised Richards to drop the 's' from his surname, believing 'Keith Richard' looked more pop and echoed Cliff Richard.
Getting ready for a role
Richards woke from sleep and recorded the riff for '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction' on a cassette player by his bed.
First role
Richards was a member of a school choir and once performed for Queen Elizabeth II, but he had to leave the group when his voice changed during adolescence.
A first
In 1965, Richards used a Gibson Maestro fuzzbox on '(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction', and the single's success sold out all stock of the device by year's end.
