Plot summary
The Wilhern servant Clara becomes pregnant by Ralph Wilhern. His parents urge him to marry another woman, and Clara jumps from a cliff in her grief. Her mother, the town witch, curses the Wilhern bloodline: the next daughter born to the family will have a pig's face and turn human only if one of her own kind loves her. Five generations bring only sons until Franklin and Jessica Wilhern have a daughter. Fearing scandal, Jessica says the baby died and hides her in their London mansion. After Penelope turns eighteen, Jessica hires the matchmaker Wanda and brings in blue blood suitors. Each suitor flees at the sight of Penelope's face, including Edward Vanderman. Edward and tabloid reporter Lemon plot to photograph her, and Lemon hires Max Campion to pose as a suitor.
