Plot summary
Nobody in Mark Bellison's world has ever said anything untrue, so people simply announce what they think. Mark writes historical readings for a film industry that has no fiction, and his scripts about the 1300s draw no interest. Anna McDoogles is beautiful and wealthy; she agrees to a date with him as a favor to his friend Greg, and tells him straight out that his looks and his money troubles rule him out for her. The following day Mark is fired, and his landlord demands the rent he does not have. At the bank the computers are down, and the teller asks him the balance. He answers with an amount that is not in his account, and she believes him.

- Writer Matthew Robinson's script began as a skit about two people on a date who cannot lie, which he expanded into a full screenplay; he and producer Lynda Obst sent it unsolicited to Ricky Gervais, who loved it and flew Robinson to London so they could retool it together into the film.
- The production company 1821 Pictures sued fellow financier Radar Pictures for breach of contract, alleging it had failed to pay a $450,000 production fee owed on the film.
- The soundtrack includes a rendition of Cat Stevens' song 'Sitting' performed by Elvis Costello that was not released anywhere else.
