Plot summary

Elizabeth Masterson is a young physician in San Francisco, and her work leaves her almost no time for anything else. A car crash follows, and three months afterward David Abbott, a recent widower, takes a sublet on her apartment. Elizabeth appears in it, and the two of them each assume the other has broken in. They work out that she can pass through walls and furniture, that she has no memory of her own life, and that she is sure she has not died. Since only David can see and hear her, everyone else takes her for a hallucination, and she asks him to help her learn who she is. He questions the other people in the building first, and none of them recognize her.
