Mary Carr

Biography

Mary Carr was an American film actress whose career spanned the silent and sound eras of film. Born in Germantown on March 14, 1874, she appeared in more than 140 films between 1915 and 1956. She became known for mother and matriarch roles in silent pictures, most notably in Fox's Over the Hill to the Poorhouse (1920), which was a major success. With the deaths of older actresses Mary Maurice and Anna Townsend, Carr, still in her forties, took over the matriarchal roles in silent films. She also appeared on the radio quiz program You Bet Your Life on June 9, 1954, hosted by Groucho Marx. She died in 1973.
