Plot summary
Singer Russ Raymond gives up stardom at its peak and joins the Navy under the name Tommy Halstead. Reporter Dorothy Roberts learns who he really is and follows him onto the battleship Alabama, hoping to photograph him and expose his identity to the world. Aboard the ship, Tommy meets sailors Smokey Adams and Pomeroy Watson, and they work to keep him hidden while Dorothy tries one scheme after another to catch him on camera. Pomeroy Watson carries a torch for Patty Andrews and writes her many letters, boasting about a muscular build and a higher rank than he really has.

When U.S. Navy officers were offended by Lou Costello's Pomeroy impersonating a captain and putting the battleship through madcap maneuvers, Universal could not cut the scene because it was the film's climax, so it turned the sequence into Pomeroy's dream, pushing the film over its original $335,000 budget.- While filming the "Sons of Neptune" initiation routine, in which each man tricks the other into asking to be sprayed in the face, Lou Costello began laughing and spat his water onto the deck; director Arthur Lubin left the moment in the finished film.
