Trailer

Plot summary

Lightning struck Jeremy Reed's mother while she was carrying him, and the charge left him hairless and able to sense what the people around him are thinking; electrical objects misbehave when he is near. His father disowned him, and his grandparents brought him up in a basement, where books were his only window on a world that ended at the farm's edge. After his grandfather dies of natural causes, Jessie Caldwell, a psychologist with child services, takes him into state care at a boys' home. Jessie enrolls him in high school, where physics teacher Donald Ripley learns of both his intellect and his powers. His pale appearance and unusual abilities leave the town's residents afraid of him and quick to ridicule him.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Powder (1995)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The production became a controversy over the choice of writer-director Victor Salva, who had been convicted of molesting a 12-year-old child actor during his directorial debut Clownhouse (1988) and was released after 15 months of a three-year sentence. Disney said it learned of the crime only after Powder had begun production, and stressed there were no minors on the set.
  • When Powder was released, the victim of that crime came forward again in an attempt to get others to boycott the film, in protest at Disney's hiring of Salva.
