Plot summary
Helen Quilley is sacked from her job at a London public relations firm. In the lift on her way out she loses an earring, and a man hands it back to her. She runs for the Underground, but a young girl gets in her way and the sliding doors close before she can get on. The moment rewinds: this time the girl's mother pulls her clear, and Helen forces the doors open and boards. Two versions of Helen continue from that second, one aboard the train, one left behind on the platform.

- Record producer The 45 King heard Dido's end-credits song "Thank You" in the film and looped its opening lines with a new bassline, sending the result to Interscope Records, where it became the basis for Eminem's song "Stan".
- The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt episode "Sliding Van Doors" shows an alternate 1998 in which Kimmy Schmidt does not get into her kidnapper's van because she does not want to miss a screening of Sliding Doors.
- Aqua's chart-topping single "Turn Back Time" built its music video almost entirely around footage and imagery lifted from this film.
- Critics repeatedly linked the film's premise to Polish director Krzysztof Kieślowski's 1987 film Blind Chance, in which a character's entire life likewise hinges on whether he catches a particular train.
