Plot summary
Sara Crewe grows up in India, the daughter of Richard, a widowed officer in the British Army who shares her taste for myths and magic. When he is called to serve in the Great War, he enrolls her at a girls' boarding school in New York City that her late mother once attended. The school belongs to Miss Maria Minchin, a spiteful headmistress, and her gentler sister Amelia. Richard pays for the largest suite and leaves Sara a locket that was her mother's and a doll called Emily, which he says will keep the two of them connected. Sara's imagination and kindness win her friends among the pupils, including Becky, who works in the scullery. Then word comes that Richard was killed in battle and that his money has been taken by the government.
