Plot summary
In a Chicago hospital, Joe Darrow works as a doctor alongside his wife Emily. Seven months pregnant, she travels to Venezuela to help native people in the Amazon, and a landslide sends her bus into a river; the authorities never recover her body. Joe goes back to work without giving himself time to mourn. One night a paperweight shaped like a dragonfly topples and rolls across the room. He also begins looking in on the young patients of the pediatric oncology unit. A boy there, Jeffrey Reardon, arrives unconscious, and the staff cannot revive him; his heart starts beating again after Joe approaches him. Jeffrey later says he was sent back with a message for Joe, and asks whether he is Emily's Joe. In the room hang drawings of a curvy cross.
