Plot summary
Roger is a boy in a foster home whose mother has died and whose father keeps only limited contact with him. Roger and his friend J.P. sneak into California Angels games, where the team is the worst in its division and manager George Knox wants to get rid of the whole roster. Roger asks his father when the two of them will be a family again, and his father answers that it will happen when the Angels win the pennant. Roger prays about it, and at a game against the Toronto Blue Jays he sees angels, led by Al, helping players make catches and hits that nobody else can explain. Knox dislikes children, but Roger can see which players are getting help, so Knox keeps the boy at his side.
