Plot summary
Margaret Prior is an upper-class woman in Victorian England. She is grieving and dislikes her life at home. She becomes an official Lady Visitor at Millbank, a women's prison, hoping to leave her troubles behind and to guide the women held there. She forms friendships with the prisoners. Of them all, she is most fascinated by Selina, an inmate described as a medium. Selina's background is shady.
