Plot summary
While employed as a companion to Mrs. Van Hopper in Monte Carlo, a young woman meets Maxim de Winter, a rich widower. After a short romance, they marry and go to his English country house, Manderley. The housekeeper, Mrs. Danvers, is devoted to Maxim's first wife, Rebecca, and reminds the new bride how much others admired Rebecca. Rebecca's cousin Jack Favell arrives saying Mrs. Danvers invited him. Maxim, who has forbidden Favell from the estate, is enraged; he accuses his wife of being unfaithful, which she denies, and she demands Mrs. Danvers resign.
