Plot summary
After Thomas Harbor proves that an afterlife exists, countless people have taken their own lives, and an interviewer asks him whether he feels responsible. On the second anniversary of the announcement, his son Will crosses on a ferry and falls into conversation with Isla, a young woman who seems familiar to him. Will grieves that people keep killing themselves; Isla calls it an easy way out. He recalls a memory from a minute spent dead, a young boy on a beach. His brother Toby drives him to the isolated mansion where their father continues his research. Helpers there once wanted to die and now have a new purpose, among them the aides Lacey and Cooper. Will blames his father for a cult and for the suicides, and says he intends to make him recant.
