Plot summary

In 1989 Tokyo, Lucy Fly, a Swedish immigrant, works as a translator at a manufacturing company. She begins a relationship with Teiji, whose photography takes in nature scenes, water reflections and abandoned buildings. Teiji says he rarely takes pictures of people, yet he wants to take her portrait, and he keeps his favorite prints locked in a filing cabinet instead of displaying them. Lucy's American friend, Lily Bridges, is in the city, and the two women and Teiji form a love triangle. When Lily goes missing, the Japanese police suspect Lucy of murder and interrogate her. Parts of the story arrive in flashbacks, among them scenes of Lucy's childhood.
