Plot summary
Malvina lies dying in her family's house in post-war Italy and tells her son Jakob that another woman will come, one who will love him, and that the first words he speaks will summon her back. Seven months on, Verena, a British nurse who works with children, arrives at the estate. Jakob has been mute since his mother's death, and Klaus, his father, has hired her. At the house she meets Alessio, who keeps the estate, and Lilia, a retired house maid. The boy is courteous but keeps his distance. Verena learns that Malvina's family held the estate and its quarries for twelve centuries, that Malvina was a celebrated pianist, and that the quarry was left to flood. One night she finds Jakob with his ear pressed to the stone wall of his room, listening.
