Plot summary
Solomon lives in Xenia, Ohio, a town still marked by the tornado that destroyed much of it and killed his father. He and his friend Tummler, both teenagers, fill their days riding bikes, sniffing glue bought from a grocer, and shooting feral cats, which the grocer intends to butcher and sell. Other residents drift through the story: three sisters, Dot, Helen and Darby, who keep a housecat; a mute boy called Bunny Boy, who goes about in pink bunny ears, shorts and sneakers; two young boys in cowboy dress who wreck a junkyard; and a girl who has shaved off her eyebrows. Solomon narrates the storm that the town has not put behind it.

- Cast member Nick Sutton, who plays Tummler, was discovered on a talk show about drug prevention, where he predicted he would probably be dead within a few years.
- Korine cast the film by approaching people on the street, in bowling alleys and in fast food restaurants and asking them to play a part in his movie.
- The film was edited down from its original NC-17 version to an R rating for its limited United States release, which was handled by Fine Line Features.
- Despite largely negative reviews on release, the film became a cult film and entered the Criterion Collection in 2024.
