Plot summary
MI6 agent Hattie Shaw leads a team into a London warehouse to take Snowflake, a programmable supervirus, from the techno-terrorist group Eteon. Brixton Lore, an Eteon operative with cybernetic implants, ambushes the team, so Hattie injects the only dose into her own hand and escapes. Brixton tells the world she stole the virus for herself. Luke Hobbs and Deckard Shaw, Hattie's older brother, hear the virus is missing, and the CIA asks the two longtime rivals to track it down. Hobbs captures Hattie and brings her in for questioning, where Shaw tells him she is his sister. Brixton attacks the CIA office to seize her, and Eteon's hold on the news media brands all three of them criminals.

- Fast & Furious producer Neal H. Moritz sued Universal in October 2018 for breach of oral contract and promissory fraud after the studio removed him as lead producer on Hobbs & Shaw; Universal then dropped him from all future Fast & Furious films, and the suit settled in September 2020, with Moritz returning for F9.

Keanu Reeves was in negotiations to voice the Eteon Director, a villain who never physically appears on screen; Ryan Reynolds ended up voicing the role under the pseudonym "Champ Nightingale", in a dual role.- Idris Elba produced a track titled "Even If I Die" featuring Cypress Hill's B-Real, and the Hybrid remix of it plays both in the film and during the end credits.
- Visual effects artists enhanced Idris Elba to give him super-human abilities, and used motion graphics as a heads-up display of data and stats, dubbed the "Brixton vision", to help him in the fight scenes.
- For the third-act chase, Framestore handled 264 visual-effects shots, photographing the Nā Pali Coast on Kauai before and during the main shoot and photo-scanning those images into a CGI version of the coastline.
- The soundtrack's first single, "Getting Started", was written by Kyle Williams, aka producer Willyecho, through the TV series Songland for Aloe Blacc, and performed by Aloe Blacc and rapper JID.
