Trailer

Plot summary

A blackout hits the FBI Cyber Division, and Deputy Director Miguel Bowman asks police departments nationwide to pick up skilled hackers. NYPD Detective John McClane is given the job of collecting Matt Farrell, who lives in New Jersey. When armed men storm Farrell's apartment, McClane and Farrell escape, and the two travel to Washington D.C. Farrell explains that he wrote an algorithm for Mai Linh to break a security system, thinking the work was legitimate. Thomas Gabriel, who leads a group of cyber-terrorists, has his crew take over transportation networks and the stock market and broadcasts a threat to the U.S. government. Farrell identifies the operation as a fire sale, designed to disable the country's infrastructure.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Bruce Willis's stunt double Larry Rippenkroeger was knocked unconscious after falling 25 feet from a fire escape, suffering broken facial bones, several broken ribs, a punctured lung and fractured wrists; production shut down and Willis personally paid his parents' hotel bills.
  • During a January 2007 fight scene, Bruce Willis was kicked above his right eye by a stunt double for Maggie Q wearing stiletto heels; director Len Wiseman realized the injury was serious enough to see bone, and Willis was hospitalized and given seven stitches through his eyebrow and into the corner of his eye.
  • Willis liked the working title Tears of the Sun so much that he had one of his own 2002 films renamed Tears of the Sun in exchange for agreeing to star in another Die Hard sequel.
  • Michael Kamen's death in 2003 made this the first film in the series not scored by him; Marco Beltrami incorporated Kamen's thematic material into his own score, but Kamen is not credited on the film or the album.
  • For the shot where a car lands on two others, a crane yanked the car and threw it through the air onto the two cars, which were also being pulled by cables; the two characters were then integrated into the footage afterwards, with CGI glass and debris added.
