Plot summary
A gun manufacturer asks Elizabeth Sloane's firm to oppose the Heaton-Harris Amendment, which would expand background checks on firearm purchases, and wants Sloane, a woman, to be the face of that campaign. She refuses. Rodolfo Schmidt, head of the smaller firm Peterson Wyatt, asks her to lead the fight for the bill instead. Sloane takes most of her colleagues with her; her closest associate, Jane Molloy, stays behind. One colleague, Pat Connors, refuses to leave and stays with the gun lobby. At Peterson Wyatt she meets Esme Manucharian, the colleague who handles gun control. The team needs sixty senators and must appeal to voters, since the gun lobby has far more money.
