Plot summary
Cady Heron arrives at North Shore High School after a childhood of homeschooling in Kenya. Janis ʻImiʻike and Damian Hubbard tell her to steer clear of the Plastics: Gretchen Wieners, Karen Shetty and their leader, Regina George. Regina brings Cady into the group, and Janis sees a chance to have her work against Regina from the inside. In calculus Cady is drawn to Aaron Samuels, a senior and Regina's ex-boyfriend. At Regina's house the Plastics show her the Burn Book, a scrapbook of cruel material about students and school staff. Cady brings word of the Burn Book to Janis and Damian, who tell her that Janis and Regina were friends until Regina spread a rumor that Janis was a lesbian.

- Rachel McAdams and Tina Fey discussed a cameo for McAdams in the film, but it did not work out; Fey instead chose Lindsay Lohan, the original Cady, as a surprise, and Variety reported Lohan was paid $500,000 for her cameo.
- Christopher Briney first turned down the role of Aaron upon learning it required him to sing, and only accepted it when the songs he was involved in were cut from the film.
- Fourteen songs from the stage musical were cut for the film, among them "Where Do You Belong?", "Fearless", "Stop", "Whose House Is This?", "More Is Better" and "Do This Thing", while a new song, "What Ifs", was written to replace Cady's introductory number "It Roars".
- The track "Not My Fault" by Reneé Rapp and Megan Thee Stallion, released as a single on December 15, 2023, is the only song on the soundtrack that is not used as a musical number in the film; it plays during the end credits.
