Avantika
Biography
Avantika Vandanapu, who works under the name Avantika, is an American actress who began as a child artist in Telugu cinema. Born in Union City, she took second place on the dance competition series Dance India Dance L'il Masters in 2014 and made her screen debut in Brahmotsavam (2016). She moved into American film with the lead role of a high school DJ in the Disney Channel movie Spin (2021), then appeared in Senior Year (2022) and as Karen Shetty in the musical comedy Mean Girls (2024), a performance critics including The Guardian's Peter Bradshaw singled out. She also took supporting parts in the horror film Tarot (2024), starred in the action thriller Pretty Lethal (2026) and led the comedy series Not Suitable for Work. She left Telugu cinema partly because she found the roles offered her too limited in variety.

In 2014, Avantika finished second in the North America Edition of Dance India Dance L'il Masters, a Zee TV dance competition reality series.
A role that slipped away
Avantika was cast as Chutki in Krishna Gaadi Veera Prema Gaadha but had to leave the production because of scheduling conflicts, so the part went to someone else.
A change of course
Avantika left Telugu cinema because the roles offered her lacked variety, mostly the younger version of the female lead or a supporting part.
Getting ready for a role
Avantika took a "temporary leave of absence" from university so she could fit the shooting schedule. In 2024 she portrayed Karen Shetty in the film version of the Broadway musical Mean Girls, itself based on the 2004 movie.
