Plot summary
Five medical students want to find out what happens after death, and one of them is willing to stop his own heart to do it. Nelson Wright goes first, flatlined for a minute while Joe Hurley, David Labraccio, Rachel Manus and Randy Steckle stand by the monitors and then bring him back. He says he cannot describe what he saw, only that something was there. The others follow him into the same temporary death, one after another, and each of them returns with a figure out of a past they had buried. Those figures do not stay in the memory. They turn up in the days that follow, and they can do real harm to the people who see them.

Kiefer Sutherland first said he was returning as Nelson Wright and that the new film was a sequel, not a remake, but in the released film his character is called Barry Wolfson, and a deleted scene shows he is the same man with a new identity.
