Plot summary
Edwina "Eddie" Franklin is a New York limousine driver who follows the Knicks from the nosebleed seats of Madison Square Garden. The roster is short on talent and long on off-court distractions, and the season is going badly. At halftime of one game, Eddie sinks a free throw in a contest and is named honorary assistant coach for the second half, where she grates on John Bailey, the head coach she had heckled from the stands earlier. Her popularity draws the attention of the team's new owner, "Wild Bill" Burgess, who forces Bailey out and hands Eddie the head coaching job. The appointment is met with skepticism as she sets out to win over a roster of overpaid players.
