Plot summary
In 2003, Kim Baker writes news copy in New York and covers stories that draw little attention. She accepts a three-month posting to Afghanistan as an on-camera reporter, and her boyfriend Chris is unhappy about it. The only preparation behind her is a hostile zone training course from a few years before. She moves into modest quarters shared with other foreign journalists, where Tanya Vanderpoel, a correspondent for the BBC, and Iain MacKelpie, a Scottish freelance photographer, become her companions, and Fahim Ahmadzai serves as her translator and guide. She gets soldiers to speak frankly on camera about what their deployment is worth, and puts herself near combat to film it. General Hollanek regards her as an inexperienced nuisance. She and her colleagues compete for the same stories and resources.

- In February 2014 Tina Fey confirmed that her production company, Little Stranger, would adapt the memoir The Taliban Shuffle: Strange Days in Afghanistan and Pakistan by Kim Barker of the Chicago Tribune.
- Pre-release tracking suggested the film would gross $10-12 million from 2,374 theaters in its opening weekend, but it ended up grossing $7.6 million, finishing below expectations and 4th at the box office.
- Before it became Whiskey Tango Foxtrot the project carried two other titles, first The Taliban Shuffle and then Fun House.
- On January 10, 2015 it was reported that Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was in talks to join the film for a male lead role, although he did not ultimately star in it.
