Plot summary
Three years after Jolly, a Broadway showman, died in a fall from a staircase at their home, his widow Kay decides to marry Rupert, an Egyptologist, and to settle with him in the house she once shared with Jolly. Not long after she moves back, Jolly appears to her as a ghost. Only Kay can see or hear him, and he interferes with her plans. Her mother and the people around her, watching Kay talk to someone who is not there, start to doubt her state of mind. Kay tries to come to terms with Jolly while Rupert wonders whether she still means to marry him.
