Plot summary
Belinda Owens serves as the doctor in her town, where she lives with her husband Lee and their adopted daughter Lillian. Annie Watson, pregnant and married to a surveyor named Peter, comes to stay with her while Peter is away, and Annie's mother-in-law Mary travels with her. Mary works as a midwife, and her home remedies and plain wisdom clash with Belinda's medical training. Belinda herself has wanted a child and has not been able to conceive, a disappointment that wears on her marriage. Lillian takes an interest in a young man who assists Lee, and Lee has grown overprotective of her. Mary's stay in the house tests Belinda's patience and her ideas about how a birth should be managed.
