Plot summary
In the frame story, Eloise tells her granddaughters about a girl she once knew who met a mermaid. Cam, a reporter, writes a letter as his niece Elle plays outside; Elle suffers from an undiagnosed illness that has no cure. His boss assigns him to look into Locke, a man in a Mississippi circus who sells water he says comes from a mermaid, and Cam hopes it can cure Elle. Cam and Elle tour the circus and find a mermaid held in a glass tank. Cam tracks down people who bought Locke's water and hears that none of them recovered, so he takes the water, and the mermaid, for a hoax.
