Biography

James Pickens Jr., an American actor, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and first acted while a student at Bowling Green State University, taking a role in a campus staging of Matters of Choice and earning a fine arts degree. His professional start came at New York City's Roundabout Theatre, where he played Walter Lee in the play A Raisin in the Sun, and in 1981 he acted with the Negro Ensemble Company in A Soldier's Play. Television work began in 1986 with the soap Another World, where he played Zack Edwards until 1990. He later appeared as Deputy Director Kersh on The X-Files and had recurring parts on Six Feet Under, JAG, Beverly Hills, 90210, Roseanne, The West Wing, and Curb Your Enthusiasm. His film credits include RocketMan (1997) and 42 (2013). Since 2005 he has portrayed Dr. Richard Webber on Grey's Anatomy, and he reprised the role of Chuck Mitchell for the Roseanne revival and The Conners.
