Plot summary
Five freshmen end up in the same detention room: Olivia White, Mohini "Mo" Banjaree, Charles "Charlie" Delgado, Stella Yamada and Wendell "Wen" Gifford. With the supervising music teacher, Miss Reznick, briefly out of the room, they play instruments and Olivia sings. Miss Reznick tells them about the Rising Star competition, which offers the winner a record deal. Stella signs the group up, and the five settle into roles: Olivia handles lead vocals, Stella plays lead guitar, Mo takes bass, Wen is on keyboards and Charlie is behind the drums. When Ray Beech, the lead singer of the band Mudslide Crush, mocks Olivia for her stage fright, Stella sprays lemonade at him, and his nickname for her becomes their band's name. The five also find that the school's lemonade machine is set to be taken away.
