Hayley Kiyoko
Biography
Hayley Kiyoko is an American actress, singer and author who started in national commercials as a child and took her first major film role in Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins (2009), playing Velma Dinkley, a part she returned to in Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster (2010). Born in Los Angeles in 1991, she went on to star in Lemonade Mouth (2011), Blue Lagoon: The Awakening (2012), Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015), Jem and the Holograms (2015) and XOXO (2016), and took recurring television roles. As a singer she released the EP This Side of Paradise and the debut album Expectations, which charted in the top 20 in the United States, Canada and Australia in 2018, and she won the MTV Video Music Award for Push Artist of the Year in 2018. Her 2023 novel Girls Like Girls reached number one on a New York Times best seller list, and she directed and co-wrote the 2026 film of it.

First role
At five years old, Kiyoko went along with a friend to a photoshoot, where the director invited her to stand before the camera. That led to her appearance in a national print ad for KnowledgeWare.
Big break
In 2009, after finishing high school, Kiyoko landed her first big film, playing Velma Dinkley in Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins. Her image nearly kept her from trying out for the part.
Behind the camera
Kiyoko turned her 2015 single "Girls Like Girls" and its music video characters into a YA novel of the same name. It came out in the US on May 30, 2023, hit number one on the New York Times Young Adult Hardcover list in week one, and stayed 7 weeks.
Early training
After graduating, Kiyoko was accepted to the Clive Davis School of Recorded Music at New York University, but she deferred and then declined the place because of career opportunities.
A change of course
Kiyoko joined the all-girl singing and dancing group the Stunners in 2007 after being approached by former pop star Vitamin C, and the group signed with Columbia Records six months later.
