Plot summary
One Steinway concert grand, model D-274 and numbered L1037, is followed through twelve months of construction. The search for wood takes the work to Alaska, and the piano's twelve thousand parts are made and fitted by 450 craftsmen at the company's factory in Queens, New York. The completed grand is displayed at Steinway Hall in Manhattan. Along the way the film visits the Bank and private auditions, and it looks at how players relate to their instruments and at what sets each Steinway apart. Pianists test and discuss Steinway pianos, and a great-grandchild of the company's founder speaks about the firm's history.
