Plot summary
Dr. Benjamin Trace, the founder of virtual reality, loses the legal fight to patent the Chiron Chip, an operating system meant to run every other computer. The corporate tycoon Jonathan Walker takes over its development, and his team recovers Jobe Smith barely alive from the ruins of Virtual Space Industries. Jobe's face is rebuilt, his legs are amputated, and he is plugged into their database to help finish the chip. Six years on, sixteen-year-old Peter Parkette is a hacker sharing a hideout in the subways of Los Angeles with other runaways. Jobe reaches him through the network and asks him to seek out Trace, who has been living in the desert, and Peter brings him back so the two can talk.

- Pierce Brosnan was set to reprise his role as Dr. Lawrence Angelo in a 1994 version of the sequel, with Farhad Mann directing a script by Brett Leonard and Gimel Everett, but two months later he was cast as James Bond in GoldenEye.
- Pierce Brosnan was asked to return for the sequel as well but was unavailable because of the production of GoldenEye, which led to Patrick Bergin being hired as Dr. Benjamin Trace.
- Early development on the sequel began under the working title CyberJob and was built around Jeff Fahey returning as Jobe Smith, but that version of the script was abandoned.
