Plot summary
Katy McLaughlin dreams of running her family's Wyoming horse ranch, but her father, Rob, grooms her older brother, Howard, to take it over and sends Katy to a private school where she feels out of place. Howard wants to go to college instead, though he fears telling his father. Home for the summer, Katy faces Rob's disapproval over an unfinished writing assignment, and her mother, Nell, and Howard welcome her. Riding in the hills, she comes across a black wild mustang and decides to tame it, hoping to show she can handle the ranch.

- A horse died at Big Sky Ranch in Simi Valley, California, on April 11, 2005, during a running scene: it broke its leg after a misstep and had to be euthanized, a death the American Humane Association called accidental and unpreventable.
- A second horse died two weeks later at the Hansen Dam Equestrian Center after getting loose from the cowboy holding its lead rope, tripping on the 13-foot rope and breaking its neck; the Los Angeles Animal Services Department concluded that accident had been preventable.
- The $15 million film grossed $21 million in United States theaters and then became a surprise hit on DVD, making more than $48 million on DVD sales and more than $19 million on DVD and home video rental.
- Reception was mixed to negative: reviewers praised Tim McGraw and Maria Bello but objected to Flicka's fur color being changed from chestnut to black and to the removal of ten-year-old Ken McLaughlin, the official protagonist, for a female lead.
