Plot summary
William Poster reports on the private lives of the wealthy for New York City's Morning Gazette, and lawsuits do not stop him. Most of his material comes from Peggy Bannon, a showgirl turned star who has had his diamond ring on her finger for five years. Peggy brings him word that heiress Mildred Huntington has ended her engagement and is leaving for Europe, and Poster slips aboard her ship. The two are drawn to one another and return to New York on the pilot boat. Following a tip one night, Poster meets Peggy in a speakeasy, where Ed Maloney of the rival Evening Examiner tells him that success has cost him his integrity.
