Plot summary
Tony Rivers has a short temper, and it lands him in fights at Rockdale High. Detective Donovan points him toward Dr. Alfred Brandon, who practices hypnotherapy at the local aircraft plant, but Tony turns the suggestion down. His girlfriend Arlene and his widowed father Charles are worried about his violence. After Tony attacks his friend Vic at a Halloween party in the old house the teenagers use, he sees his friends' shocked faces and decides to get help. Brandon judges Tony's history ideal for a scopolamine serum of his own making, which regresses a personality to its primitive instincts. His assistant, Dr. Hugo Wagner, warns the experiment could kill Tony. Brandon injects him anyway, calling it a sedative before hypnosis. In session, Brandon draws out childhood memories and suggests that Tony was once a wild animal.

- I Was a Teenage Werewolf was the first of four "teenage monster" films AIP produced in 1957 and 1958: I Was a Teenage Frankenstein and Blood of Dracula, both released in November 1957, and How to Make a Monster, released in 1958.
- Producer Samuel Z. Arkoff wrote in his memoirs that he got a lot of resistance for making a film about a teenager becoming a monster, an idea that had never been exploited in film before.
- I Was a Teenage Werewolf likely paved the way for Walt Disney's The Shaggy Dog (1959), which starred Tommy Kirk as the hapless teenager and Fred MacMurray, and was Disney's version of Felix Salten's novel The Hound of Florence.
- The film's "I Was a Teenage..." title pattern was reused by AIP for its sequel I Was a Teenage Frankenstein and for Attack of the Puppet People's original working title I Was a Teenage Doll, and was satirised in Max Shulman's 1959 novel I Was a Teenage Dwarf.
