Plot summary
Count Dakkar rules a volcanic island near Hetvia and has done away with class distinctions among its people. Dakkar, Sonia and her fiance Nicolai Roget design a submarine together, and Roget takes it on its first test voyage. Baron Falon, Hetvia's despotic ruler, seizes the island. Falon chases Roget and Dakkar in a second submarine, and the two craft dive to the ocean floor, where dragons, a giant squid and an undiscovered humanoid race live in a strange land.

- The Mysterious Island went into production in 1926, but weather problems and the arrival of talkies halted filming several times, and it was not finished and released until three years later.
- John Ernest Williamson shot underwater scenes for the film using his Williamson Submarine Tube, but that footage was not used in the finished version.
- After years in which only one color reel was thought to survive, a complete Technicolor print of the film was found in Prague in December 2013, and the restored film premiered at the 33rd Pordenone Silent Film Festival in October 2014.
- The film's financial failure cost Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer $878,000, a heavy loss for a film made at the end of the 1920s.
