Clyde Beatty
Biography
Clyde Beatty was an American circus performer and animal trainer who got his start in 1921 as a helper with Howe's Great London Circus. Born in Bainbridge, Ohio, he learned from trainers Louis Roth and John Guilfoyle, and by 1923 he was presenting groups of big cats, beginning a run of 42 straight circus seasons. His signature routine placed him inside a cage with lions, tigers, and other animals while he carried only a whip and a pistol; at its peak it brought together up to 43 big cats, a world record. He trained many species, including hippos, polar bears, and hyenas, and owned several traveling shows, among them the Clyde Beatty Circus from 1945 to 1956. Beatty also appeared in movies from the 1930s into the 1950s, including The Big Cage (1933), and starred in a radio adventure series, The Clyde Beatty Show, which aired from 1950 to 1952. He died in 1965.
