Plot summary
In 1916 London, Dr. Lily Houghton studies the Tears of the Moon, a tree that can cure illness, and believes an arrowhead can reveal its location. The Royal Society, which admits no women, denies her and her brother the artifact, so Lily steals it. They travel to Brazil and hire Frank Wolff, a skipper who stages jungle cruises with faked dangers, to take them down the Amazon. Frank first declines, then agrees when he sees the arrowhead. Prince Joachim, who wants the tree for the German Empire, follows them.

- In 2011, Tom Hanks and Tim Allen, who had previously worked together in the Toy Story franchise, were announced to star in the long-gestating Jungle Cruise film, with a script to be written by Roger S. H. Schulman.
- Jack Whitehall was cast as the brother of Emily Blunt's character, and a report that he would have a coming-out scene drew backlash, with people angry that a straight man was cast as a "camp" gay character; it was the second gay character in a live-action Disney film, after Le Fou, played by Josh Gad in Beauty and the Beast.
- Metallica collaborated with score composer James Newton Howard on an instrumental version of their song "Nothing Else Matters" for the film; drummer Lars Ulrich said Disney president Sean Bailey felt Jungle Cruise was the right fit for a Disney-Metallica collaboration.
- The visual effects team produced more than 200 varieties of trees for the film's jungle, and its widest shot includes more than 10 million trees, bushes and other species.
- A port town set for the film was built at Kapaia Reservoir on Kauai, near Wailua Falls, taking one month to scout, two months to design and four months to build, dress and landscape, while flood rains challenged the production.
- Frank's pet jaguar Proxima was portrayed on set by a stunt actor in a jaguar morphsuit and a stuffed toy, then animated using reference plates mostly shot of a female jaguar at San Diego Zoo, down to details like a mark on her forehead and a folded-over ear.
- The underwater sequence was shot in a puzzle set built inside a second water tank; underwater cinematographer Ian Seabrook said it took about two weeks, filmed while the main cast was shooting in the first tank, so stunt doubles had to be present too.
